The show has been canceled for several reasons. During a party this weekend we accrued some fairly severe property damage. This kind of thing is unfortunately very common for the warehouse. I chose to venture against resignation in the face of past catastrophes in an attempt to create an art-focused event that utilized the beauty and openness of the space for inspiration as opposed to destruction and wastedness. I am sad to say that I have lost my confidence in this possibility. The reputation of the warehouse as a place for huge parties is so strong that no matter how we advertised or executed this event, it would "blow up". In the interest of the survival of the space (the property owners are getting fed up) we simply cannot risk something so probably catastrophic.

My stablemates and I use "mane and tail" brand horse shampoo. It works best with short manes and you can buy it at any Walmart. His leg was broken during a ride across our pasture. Ever since then, he has had an awkward trot.

Chrome Wings’ debut sets sound against sound

Thursday night’s bill at Holocene featured a West coast roll call, with U.S.F. (Universal Studios Florida) of Seattle—though it seemed they were unable to perform—and Tracey Trance of Olympia. The unifying force in the lineup, however, was the debut, self-titled LP release of Portland’s Chrome Wings. Both the coordination and the equipment of the other performers were frequently dubious, but it was with aplomb that Jon Jurow of Chrome Wings and his cohort Shane McDonell smoothed their slabby, oscillating blanket of electronic sound out in front of us. The Pioneer Log and Jurow exchanged a few (appropriately) electronic words, discussing song structures, pollination, and future plans.

PL: Some of your songs/pieces are founded on discernible beats, while others feel a bit more improvisatory or aleatoric. Do you tend to think of your work as a noise “artist” or as a pop musician? Are you interested in an audience’s judgment of noise v. pop?
JJ: Definitely interested in both sides of the spectrum. It’s been interesting to see more of a cross pollination of genres within the last few years, in great part due to the accessibility of music through blogs and file sharing; people seem to have more of an open ear to things right now. I don’t really think of myself as a noise artist, though I play a lot of “noise” bills and have a great appreciation for people who work with sound and push it in exciting directions. I relate to pop music in the sense of a piece based around rhythm and melody as a foundation, or a hook to build off of; and, no matter how obscured it gets in processing, hopefully having this thing, feeling, or memory that comes back to you.
PL: What tends to be your balance of samples v. synthetic sound? What do you like about each of those?
JJ: I use sampling as a way to arrange ideas and as a way to form and perform pieces live. I don’t sample records or use it in that sense; it’s more like a keyboard where different notes are different samples. I generally like starting with something more organic and then adding sounds that are more mechanical or other-worldly for texture or to balance things out. I like the idea of sounds that aren’t easily identifiable, as to their origins; it keeps things more open for the listener. There are really no rules as to how things go down [in performance]. I’d like to move towards something more physical or visual, at least for the live show—keep changing.
PL: What would a score to one of your songs/pieces look like?
JJ: Since neither of us can really write music it’s usually just a visual idea or feeling we’re shooting for.
PL: Does performance space play much of a part in your music? Do you have a favorite or “dream” space in Portland? Would you rather people listen to your recordings or hear you perform live?
JJ: Very much so; the space puts a lot of elements into play as far as the atmosphere we can create in the room. Also, speaker placement, wattage, and routing are taken into consideration. As I get more comfortable with performing live I feel like you can make it more of a celebration—something beyond just a show. Recordings provide something completely different, but equally as important.
PL: What are your plans now that you’ve released this album?
JJ: Shane and I have been hard at work on our follow up release for Stunned, which will be out April 20th. Summer tour with Italic Indian through the West and Midwest and a third still secret release later in 2010.

As unnerving as noise rock can be to those not equipped with elephant skin and a masochism for aural punishment, Chrome Wings teeter that line between crass and catchy - assuming this is a pre-existing line. Amidst the steady feedback drone, the caterwaul of cacophony and the esoteric keys, Chrome Wings reel in the weirdness with blip-beat breaks and 8-bit sampling. Each time the barrage of deafening reverb roars feels unbearable, the band escapes into a vacuum of soothing, distant drone and day-dream vocals.
Chrome Wings' self-titled debut is challenging enough for the noise purists to get their jollies off on ear-bleeding textural noise and tender enough for the casual ear of curiosity to listen without suffering a hemorrhage.
Chrome Wings is out March 4 on Sohitek Records.

Up In The Air: An interview with Chrome Wings

To try and pin down the sound of Chrome Wings is to reduce the sheer sonic impact of what Jon Jurow, the architect behind the group, has created. It is rooted in the worlds of electronica, lo-fi pop, and the shoegazer movement of the late 80’s. But it expands and elevates these elements into big, bulbous masses of rumbling bass notes, gurgling synth tones and the occasional squall of detuned guitar. It lends the songs on the first Chrome Wings full-length (out in early March on Sohitek Records) the bounce and float of slowly deflating helium balloons.

As the release date of the group’s debut CD approaches, as does the release of a cassette featuring the new incarnation of Chrome Wings including new addition Shane McDonnell, Oregon Music News grabbed the attention of the duo for some insight into the creation of this singular sound.

What can you tell me about your musical background? Did you always have an interest in the types of sounds you are making with Chrome Wings or did you ever set out to be in a traditional rock band?

Jon: I’ve always had an interest in sound. As a kid, I was always listening to street noise or sitting near the stream at the house I grew up in for good parts of the day. But at that point I was completely unaware of applying those thoughts on sound to music. The first music that really grabbed me was the whole Seattle scene and bands like Nirvana which led me to further explore a lot of the punk and post-punk that came before them. It wasn’t till much later on that I discovered dub music, Brian Eno, Wolfgang Voigt, Sunroof, etc., and started thinking about music and performance outside of a rock-ist tradition.

When did you start making music like what we hear on the new album? What sent you in that direction?

Jon: I guess I started switching to more sample-based music out of the convenience of no longer having to haul around quite as much gear. Using the house PA allowed for stereo panning options, etc. Being able to have more control of that atmosphere in the room. Last spring, I felt a giant shift in other aspects of my life and wanted to make something more obscured but grounded musically.

How much of the music on the new album is constructed from samples/found sound and how much of it is coming from your own playing?

Jon: It’s almost completely my own playing. I don’t really sample other people’s records or anything like that. There’s a fair amount of processed “field recordings,” though a lot of those were in controlled environments as far as how the mics were placed.

One of the more interesting aspects of this album is that there are vocals on some of the tracks, but they are almost completely obscured by the rest of the music or reverb–why hide your lyrics like that?

Jon: I really like the human aspect of hearing vocals on a recording. I just like them to sit right in the mix and in the context of more textural music. I’m not a fan of dry vocals. Reverb and volume help those tones wash over the track and make it more cohesive, less detached.

What inspires a song–is it just you messing around with sounds and letting things evolve from there or do you set out with a goal of sorts in mind?

Jon: Occasionally I have a goal in mind or a feeling I want to get across but more often than not it comes out more subconsciously. Combining different sounds with a melody that was in my head earlier that day on the train or whatever. More recently it’s been a more combined effort working with Shane, having both of us bouncing things back and forth till they sound right.

There are a lot of artists like yourself that are releasing music on cassette. What do you like about the cassette that makes you want to use it as a vehicle for your songs?

Shane: Releasing music on tape provides an exciting alternative to digital mp3 formatted music, because it is a tangible thing you can hold in your hand. It also gives us more control over our music, because although there is fast forward there isn’t shuffle mode or infinite tracks to choose from. Listening to a tape provides less distractions than an iPod, or whatever else. Besides vinyl, tape makes the most sense for what were doing.

Following the release of this album, you have a cassette coming out. What can you tell me about that? Is it of a similar stripe as the sounds on the CD or are you going in a different direction?

Shane: I guess the main difference is that the new songs for the Stunned cassette are the first songs we’ve created together.

Jon: Ditto… we’re definitely pushing all the same elements further with the goal of creating something timeless.

Where do you want Chrome Wings to go from here? Do you have any plans for the future of the group?

Shane: We’ve talked about possibly moving to New York at the end of this summer, as well as a Midwest and West Coast tour with Italic Indian. Mainly I hope we continue to make music we’re excited about. Who knows what we’ll end up doing in the future. I just hope I can buy a PT Cruiser some day.

Jon: Constantly evolving and continue releasing material were happy with.

Review:Chrome Wings

A lot of musicians let their influences dictate the direction of their work, preferring to color within the lines of their chosen milieu. This seems especially true when it comes to their first album. Others choose the opposite tack, learning from the music and art that inspires them, and then taking it in new and thrilling directions.

It is in that latter group where you'll find the real groundbreakers. And it's where you'll find the work of Jon Jurow, the ambient experimentalist who plays under the name Chrome Wings.

Spend some time with this new self-titled album, and you'll recognize some of the artists and styles that sent Jurow on his musical journey. There's dub reggae burbling under the surface of "Purple Palms," as well as the shimmering work of electronic pioneers like Brian Eno and Jon Hassell. There are plenty of nods to the "glitchtronica" movement in the truncated samples and slapdash approach to songs like "Boppin Gophers" and "New Legs."

The trick is that these aural homages don't ever stay put. They are mere building blocks that are combined, splintered into pieces, or balloon out into a colorful mass of sound and texture. "In the Stream," for example, turns the elements of hardcore techno on their head: a tense keyboard melody is never allowed to resolve, the insistent thumping rhythm reduced to a single bump. By the end, the song dissolves into an ambient wash.

Even without a suitcase full of comparatives, "Chrome Wings" succeeds solely on a surface level as well. There's a real emotional pull to tracks including "Always Up" and "Debt Dreams," both of which center on soaring waves of shimmering sound that quickly sweep you up. It's angular without being obtuse, unhinged but not unbearable. It's adventurous music for the common listener.
